Avant-garde Books proudly remembers esteemed
poet Gwendolyn Brooks (1917-2000) who was born on this day in 1917. She was the first African-American to win a
Pulitzer Prize for her book of poetry, “Annie Allen”! Brooks became the Poet Laureate
of Illinois in 1968 and held that position until her death. #LiteracyMatters #GoodWritersMatter ๐
Avant-garde Books, LLC is the first Black mother/daughter-owned bookstore in the world. While their physical location at the Mall West End in SW Atlanta is no longer open, they are still committed to promoting literacy and learning, especially among socioeconomically disadvantaged children. Their mission is not just to sell books, but they strive to save and empower members of their commUNITY with the right knowledge about themselves, their history, race, culture, and identity.
